Picture framing can be expensive for several reasons:

  1. Materials: High-quality frames are often made from expensive materials such as solid wood, metal, or premium plastics. Additionally, archival-quality matting, glass or acrylic glazing, and backing materials are used to protect and preserve the artwork, which can drive up the cost.
  2. Labor and craftsmanship: Professional framing requires skilled labor and craftsmanship. Framers need to accurately measure and cut materials, assemble the frame, mount the artwork, and ensure it is properly secured and aligned. This level of expertise and attention to detail contributes to the cost.
  3. Customization: Many picture frames are custom-made to fit the specific dimensions of the artwork. Custom framing involves additional time, effort, and resources compared to mass-produced, standard-sized frames.
  4. Art preservation: If the artwork has significant monetary or sentimental value, the framing process may include conservation-grade materials and techniques to protect it from deterioration over time. These conservation methods often come with higher costs.
  5. Special features: Some frames may include special features, such as intricate designs, beveled edges, or decorative elements that add to the overall cost.
  6. Location: Framing costs can also vary depending on the geographical location. In areas with higher living costs or limited competition, framing services may be more expensive.
  7. Frame shop overhead: Frame shops have operational costs such as rent, utilities, insurance, and employee wages, which are factored into the pricing.
  8. Transportation and shipping: If the artwork needs to be transported or shipped to a framing shop, additional costs may be incurred for packaging and handling.
  9. Brand and reputation: Certain framing shops may have built a reputation for their expertise and craftsmanship, allowing them to charge higher prices based on their brand recognition.

It’s important to note that the cost of framing can vary widely depending on these factors, and it’s always a good idea to get multiple quotes and compare prices before making a decision. Additionally, for less valuable or non-sentimental artwork, there are more affordable framing options available that still provide adequate protection and display quality.

If you’re after a picture frame that fits best into your budget, and you have a standard sized image that is not of great value, it will always be more cost effective to choose a ready made picture frame at one of the many stores in town. Ready made frames are produced en-masse, meaning they are mostly made in a machine operated factory with very little labour and cheap materials. Thousands of frames can be produced each hour. At Dawsons framing we produce each frame from superior quality and archival quality materials. A single frame can pass through 3 people in 3 departments (meet our team) and can take several hours, this contributes to cost of each frame.

Why should I have my artwork professionally framed?

Having your artwork professionally framed at Dawsons Framing offers several benefits that can enhance the overall presentation, preservation, and display of your art. Here are some reasons why you should consider professional framing:

  1. Preservation: Dawsons Framing uses archival-quality materials, such as acid-free matting and UV-protective glazing, which help protect your artwork from fading, discoloration, and deterioration over time. These conservation methods can extend the life of your artwork, ensuring it stays in excellent condition for years to come.
  2. Customization: We create custom frames that perfectly complement your artwork, enhancing its visual appeal and making it stand out. With a wide range of frame styles, mat colors, and glazing options to choose from, you can find the perfect combination that suits your artwork and personal preferences.
  3. Proper handling: We have each been trained through our apprenticeships to have the expertise to handle your artwork with care, ensuring it is not damaged during the framing process. We know how to mount the artwork securely without causing any harm to the piece.
  4. Professional finishing: The quality of craftsmanship that comes with professional framing ensures that your artwork is framed neatly, with precise measurements, tight corners, and even mounting. This attention to detail elevates the overall look of the artwork.
  5. Conservation framing: If your artwork has significant monetary or sentimental value, Dawsons Framing can offer conservation framing techniques that safeguard the artwork from environmental damage, such as humidity and light exposure.
  6. Display enhancement: A well-chosen frame and mat can draw attention to the artwork’s key features, directing the viewer’s focus to the art itself. The right framing can enhance the visual impact of your artwork and complement its style.
  7. Long-term value: Properly framed artwork may retain its value better than pieces that are not adequately protected. If you have valuable or collectible art, professional framing can be an investment in preserving its worth.
  8. Gallery presentation: If you plan to exhibit your artwork in galleries or art shows, professionally framed pieces are more likely to be taken seriously by curators, collectors, and visitors.
  9. Aesthetics and interior decor: Professionally framed artwork adds sophistication and elegance to your living or working spaces. The right framing can tie together the overall interior design and create a cohesive and attractive environment.
