Standard Picture Framing Printing Sizes: In this blog post, we take a look at some of the Standard Common Picture Framing and Printing Sizes that we see in house here at Dawson’s framing.

Standard Picture Framing Printing Sizes: The majority of our printing and framing work is made up to custom sizing specifications, even so, it’s useful to get to know some of our standard sizes to make the best, most sustainable use out of the materials, with minimal throw-away factors.

Let’s start with our standard in-house materials.

  • A standard matboard size is approximately: 816 x 1020mm
  • An oversized matboard / backing board (3mm / 5mm / 10mm thickness) size is approximately: 1020 x 1500mm
  • Extra sized matboards and backing boards (3mm / 5mm / 10mm thickness) are available with special orders
  • A standard 2mm clear glass panel is: 1219 x 914mm (36″ x 48″)
  • A standard Art Glass Panel is: 813 x 1016mm (32″ x 40″)
  • A Medium Art Glass Panel is: 1219 x 914mm (36″ x 48″)
  • A large Art Glass Panel is: 1219 x 1727mm (48″ x 68″)

Common photography framing sizes are often based on standard paper and print sizes, as well as popular aspect ratios. Here are some common photography framing sizes:

  1. 4″ x 6″ (101.6 x 152.4mm): A standard small print size that’s often used for casual photos and snapshots.
  2. 5″ x 7″ (127 x 177.8mm): A slightly larger print size that’s commonly used for framing photos and displaying them on desks or mantels.
  3. 8″ x 10″ (203.2 x 254mm): A popular choice for framing more substantial photos or portraits. It’s a versatile size that works well for various subjects.
  4. 8.5″ x 11″ (215.9 x 279.4mm): A standard letter-sized print that’s frequently used for printing and framing documents as well as photos.
  5. 11″ x 14″ (279.4 x 355.6mm): A larger size suitable for framing more significant photos or artworks. This size provides a good balance between visibility and space requirements.
  6. 16″ x 20″ (406.4 x 508mm): A popular size for framing artwork and professional photographs. It offers a substantial display area.
  7. 18″ x 24″ (457.2 x 609.6mm): A common poster size that can be used for larger prints or artwork. It’s also a size often used for promotional materials.
  8. 20″ x 24″ (508 x 609.6mm): Similar to the 16″ x 20″ size, this larger option provides an expanded display area for photographs and artwork.
  9. 24″ x 36″ (609.6 x 914.4mm): A larger poster size that’s frequently used for showcasing artwork, promotional materials, or photographs with a significant visual impact.
  10. 30″ x 40″ (762 x 1016mm): A sizable frame option suitable for larger artwork and photographs. It provides an impressive display area.
  11. A4 11.7″ x 8.3″ (210 x 297mm) The most common international paper size used for certificates and standard document printing.
  12. A3 11.7″ x 16.5″ (297 x 420mm): Another international paper size used for framing smaller artwork and photos.
  13. A2 16.5″ x 23.4″ (420 x 594mm): A common international paper size that’s often used for framing photographs and artwork in countries that follow the ISO paper size standards.
  14. A1 23.4″ x 33.1″ (594 x 840mm): A common international paper size used for posters and and impactful presentations.
  15. A0 33.1″ x 46.8″ (840 x 1188mm): A common international paper size used for posters, maps and impactful presentations.

Standard Common Picture Framing and Printing Sizes:  Remember that these sizes are just guidelines, and the actual dimensions of a framed photo can vary based on the width of the matting and the frame itself. Additionally, cropping an image to specific aspect ratios (such as 3:2, 4:3, or 16:9) might result in slightly different print sizes. When selecting a framing size, consider the visual impact you want to achieve and the space where you plan to display the framed photograph.
