Creative Matboard Techniques: Why do we put matboards around an artwork/ photo when framing?

Matboards, also known as matting or mats, serve several important purposes when it comes to framing artwork. We’ve summarised a few of the reasons matboards are important when framing your printed / paper based / flat artwork. (We even frame paintings with matboards too)

  1. Protection: Matboards create a physical separation between the artwork and the glazing (glass or acrylic) used in the frame. This helps prevent the artwork from coming into direct contact with the glazing, which can protect it from condensation, sticking, or damage that might occur due to direct contact.
  2. Preservation: Acid-free and archival-quality matboards are used to help preserve the artwork over time. These matboards are designed to be pH-neutral and prevent acids from leaching into the artwork, which can cause yellowing, discoloration, or deterioration.
  3. Airflow: A matboard allows for a small amount of airspace between the artwork and the glazing. This airflow can help prevent the buildup of moisture, which can lead to mold or other forms of deterioration.
  4. Visual Separation: Matboards create a visual separation between the artwork and the frame. This separation can enhance the visual presentation of the artwork by providing a buffer that draws the viewer’s focus to the image itself.
  5. Enhancement: Matboards are often used to enhance the visual impact of the artwork by providing a complementary border that complements the colors, style, and theme of the piece. They can also provide a transition between the artwork and the frame, helping to integrate the two elements seamlessly.
  6. Spacing and Depth: Matboards create a spacing between the artwork and the glazing, which can add a sense of depth to the framed piece. This can make the artwork appear more three-dimensional and dynamic.
  7. Customization: Matboards come in various colors, textures, and widths, allowing for creative customization of the framing design. This customization can help tailor the presentation to the specific artwork and the intended aesthetic.
  8. Ease of Handling: Matboards provide a sturdy border that makes it easier to handle and secure the artwork within the frame. They can be used to hold the artwork in place without directly adhering it to the backboard.

Overall, matboards play a crucial role in both the protection and aesthetic presentation of framed artwork. When selecting a matboard for framing, factors such as color, texture, material quality, and archival properties should be considered to ensure the best outcome for the artwork’s preservation and visual appeal.
