In 2018, Dawson’s Framing on the Gold Coast partnered with Graham Reynolds, of of Australia master craftsman when it comes to classic, traditional, period framing and gilding. Graham mentors the staff at Dawson’s Framing in many of the traditional framing techniques such as gilding, creating compos (composition ornament), frame design from the different eras.

Graham is master period framer. Specialising in gilded (gold leaf) period frames, he has framed many prolific Australian Artists for Galleries across the country. His wealth of knowledge, both local and international is inspiring.

Mr Graham Reynold’s signature ‘stern’ look has been around the Dawson’s framing studio since joining us in 2020. His expertise in museum grade framing, gilding and machine profiles is unsurpassed.

You’d be hard-pressed to visit an Australian Art Gallery / Museum without coming across one some of his handiwork.

Graham’s claim-to-fame is his work developing signature frames for the iconic Australian Artist: Margaret Olley as well as framing works for the Queensland Art Gallery.

Graham’s work was mentioned on an ABC Show with Phillip Bacon. He attributes his success to surrounding himself with people passionate, skilled and successful in their crafts and learning to perfect his own skills from them.

1. Baroque Frame: Baroque frames originated in the 17th century and are characterized by their ornate and elaborate designs. They often feature intricate carvings, scrolls, and decorative motifs.
2. Rococo Frame: Rococo frames emerged in the 18th century and are associated with the Rococo art movement. They are known for their delicate and asymmetrical designs, featuring motifs like flowers, shells, and foliage.

• Neoclassical Frame: Neoclassical frames became popular in the late 18th century and early 19th century, influenced by classical Greek and Roman architecture. They often have clean lines, geometric shapes, and minimal ornamentation.
• Victorian Frame: Victorian frames were prevalent during the Victorian era (1837-1901). They can be quite ornate, with intricate detailing, embossed patterns, and decorative corners. They vary in style from simple to highly embellished.

• Art Nouveau Frame: Art Nouveau frames were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and are characterized by their flowing lines, organic forms, and nature-inspired motifs such as flowers, leaves, and vines.
• Art Deco Frame: Art Deco frames gained popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. They feature bold geometric shapes, sleek lines, and stylized motifs like sunbursts, zigzags, and stepped patterns.

 

 

• Modernist Frame: Modernist frames emerged in the 20th century, influenced by modern art movements such as Cubism, Constructivism, and Minimalism. They often have simple, clean lines, and a focus on functionality.

These are just a few examples of period frames, and there are many other styles and variations within each historical period. Each type of frame carries its own unique characteristics and can help enhance the presentation and aesthetic of the artwork or photograph it holds.
