The Gilding Process: Precision and Artistry

Gold leaf gilding is a meticulous process that demands both skill and patience. It begins with preparing the wooden frame, smoothing its surface with gesso and applying layers of bole clay. These layers not only create an adhesive surface but also provide depth to the final gilded finish.

The gold leaf, so delicate it’s almost weightless, is then carefully laid onto the prepared surface. Our master framers, Graham Reynolds and Scott Dawson, excel in this process, bringing decades of experience and passion to every frame.

Steps in the Gold Gilding Process

Surface Preparation: A smooth layer of gesso is applied to the frame to create a solid foundation.
Application of Bole: Bole clay, in red or yellow hues, is layered on to enhance the depth and warmth of the gold.
Gold Leaf Application: Thin sheets of gold leaf are carefully applied using a brush or specialized tools.
Burnishing: Depending on the desired finish, the gold surface may be polished to a high shine or left matte.
Sealing: A protective layer is added to ensure longevity and durability.
